Here we get into the sensitive area of gender. I offer you this scale of
listening positions with the caveat that it is something of a gender
stereotype. The following is certainly not true of all males and all females
– remember, everyone has a unique listening – but, after interacting with
thousands of people on this distinction, I believe there is some value in it,
and for many people it has been powerfully revealing. One gentleman
came up to me after a workshop in Philadelphia and proclaimed: “That
was the best marital advice I’ve ever encountered!”, while at another a
doctor, with tears in his eyes, shared that he had just realised that on
arriving home each evening after a hard day at the hospital, his wife tried
to share her day and he was simply unable to listen to her – and now he

knew how to do that. So, with a health warning about gender
stereotyping, let’s consider 2 gender-based listening positions.
Reductive
listening
Men (not all men, not all the time) 
tend
to listen from a position I call
reductive. Reductive listening seeks a point, a solution, a destination for
the conversation. It can appear as impatient, or even rude: if a reductive
listener sees (or believes he sees) the point, he may interrupt in order to
short-circuit the conversation and arrive at the destination with less time
wasted. I have seen male friends and acquaintances of mine have rather
dysfunctional conversations when each participant has decided the
conversation has a different destination! Reductive listening loves solving
problems, gathering facts and generating opinions, and this is what a lot
of male conversation comprises – stating problems, swapping
information and offering solutions or opinions. The archetypical male
conversations about driving routes, sport and cars are great examples of
reductive communication. It’s very effective when there is a problem to
solve or a practical challenge to face, or when time is tight.
