POSITIONS
Now let’s look at a few common listening positions. I will offer them as 3
scales: active to passive, critical to empathic, and reductive to expansive.
None of them are intended to be presented as good, bad or for you; the
intention here is simply to get you thinking about positions you might
want to create for yourself. Of course, if you see something in these
positions – either something you like, or something you want to move
away from – then take whatever is helpful from them.

Active
listening
Active listening is used widely in therapeutic professions such as
counselling or psychotherapy as well as in education and journalism, and
forms an important element in parenting courses like Parent
Effectiveness Training and in relationship programmes like Imago
Therapy (both programmes I heartily recommend). Active listening can
also be very powerful in selling.
This position involves intention, focus, reflection and summarising. The
listener must fully set the intention of listening with total attention and
no interventions – those interventions we so often make, where we
interject, interrupt, correct or attempt to clarify. Then they focus on what
is said, and reflect it back exactly as it was said, or as near as possible to
that. This might sound something like: “What I heard you say is…” and
then “Is that right?” to check the reflection was accurate. At the end of the
conversation, or every so often if it’s a very long talk, the listener
summarises what has been said to ensure that everything has been safely
and accurately received. The intention is to leave the speaker feeling fully
heard.

It takes practice to do this without sounding robotic, but it can be
immensely powerful in defusing upset, whether dealing with customer
complaints or an angry teenager. We’ve all done this when being given
