Some listening contexts deserve special mention because they are so
important. Let’s touch on a few of them now.
LOVING
LISTENING
Not listening 
in
love, because that’s probably one of the few times when
we do afford someone our complete, undivided attention. Loving
listening can be universal, as with 
agape
love in Christianity or loving-
kindness in Buddhism: in our language, this could be listening for the
gold in other people, in the complete confidence that it is there, even if
sometimes deeply buried!
Loving listening can also be very specific, and in a long-term loving

relationship it becomes fundamental and crucial. You may well have
come across Gary Chapman’s book 
The 5 Love Languages,
where he
categorises 5 ways that love can be expressed and suggests that each of us
has our own preferences for the one(s) that really get through to us – so if
you are sending the wrong one, it’s like speaking a different language to
your partner: they just don’t get it. The ‘languages’ that he lists are: words
of affirmation; acts of service; receiving gifts; quality time; and physical
touch. These may resonate with you, or you may even have something of
your own that means the world to you – and the same for your partner. If
you’ve never done this, listen to your partner to understand their
preferred love language and you may break through to new levels of
connection. If confused, just ask!
Another wonderful practice in relationship, particularly long-term
relationship, is to set yourself a listening position for an hour, a day, or
even for good, of listening as if for the first time. This means consciously
casting aside all the “Oh, there you go again…” thoughts, stopping all the
mental (or even verbal) sentence-completing, and absolutely being
determined that you do
