top universities from all over the world. If Dutch universities want to pursue the higher purpose, they
need to collaborate instead of compete.
However, most respondents mention a less drastic future for the academic office workplace,
since social contact is still desired. When deciding what the academic office workplace of the future
will look like, one needs to look at how students currently work, since they are the employees of the
future. The current generation is reported to prefer collaborative work above individual work and is
less bound to a physical location or setting, so NWW is the only way of working they know. Therefore,
they do not require a transition process as opposed to the current group of employees. The academic
office workplace of the future is therefore claimed to characterize itself with more social and shared
areas, focused on meetings, whereby organizational attachment is maintained since employees will
come to the office. Students and teacher will mix and knowledge will be exchanged. Respondents
have reported that, especially an academic organization, needs to make sure that all kind of work
activities are optimally supported in the workplace design. An often mentioned design is closable
offices around the edges of an area for concentration work, surrounding an open area focused on
meeting and collaboration. This ensures that you have both the opportunity for informal encounters
and concentration work. However, respondents disagree whether the offices around the edge
thereby need to be territorial (privately-owned) or non-territorial.
In addition, other respondents have reported that the academic office workplace of the
future will look exactly like in the current situation; nothing will change, since academics are labeled
as very conservative and stubborn, creating a resistance to change. Furthermore, respondents have
reported that there is no need for change, since science happens inside the head of scientists and
open work environments as can be found in business organizations are claimed to be not functional
given the work activities of academics.
It can thus be concluded that respondents have reported widespread future visions
concerning the academic office workplace. Most respondents have reported that the academic office
workplace will change. Some respondents claim a potential disappearance of the university as a
physical anchor point in the (far) future, automatically resulting in disappearing academic office
workplaces. However, the majority claims that people still desire meeting other people in person,
whereby the academic office workplace will be more focused on meetings and collaborations.
However, they disagree whether the offices will be territorial or non-territorial.
