Cultural Conflicts over Shashmakom in the Ferghana Valley
The traditional music of shashmakom can be divided into three main styles: those 
of Bukhara, Ferghana-Tashkent, and Khujand. The differences among them are not 
immense, consisting mainly of nuances in vocal performance style. Tajik authorities 
today are trying to develop national centers for shashmakom in Sughd province 
of Ferghana and in Tajikistan’s south. The Tajik academician Mukhammadzhon 
Shukuri has sharply criticized this governmental initiative for favoring the Ferghana-
Tashkent style over the style of Bukhara. According to Shukuri, the shashmakom 
is the very essence of Tajik culture, and the Bukharan style alone is the epitome 
of shashmakom. In this assertion he demotes somewhat the cultural authority of 
the Ferghana region from which both the Khujand and Ferghana-Tashkent styles

arose, and at the same time makes an indirect statement about the political link 
between the Ferghana Valley and Tashkent, the Uzbek capital. Meanwhile, Uzbeks 
themselves have de-Persianized the term shashmakom in favor of the name makom, 
just as they have changed many Tajik street names in the Ferghana Valley to Uzbek 
ones. On its side, the Tajik government has virtually canonized shashmakom and 
to some extent ideologized it.
Discussions at a seven-day conference on shashmakom held in Dushanbe in April 
2008 showed this process in full bloom. Three of the five ensembles that performed 
came from the Ferghana region, but all had been trained under the new shashma-
kom
Academy in Dushanbe. Experts proceeded to debate whether the Khujand and 
Ferghana-Tashkent styles were indeed independent phenomena or merely altered 
adaptations of the “canonic” prototype from Bukhara. One speaker implied that the 
problem with the Ferghana style is that it enjoys too much freedom.

These debates bring to mind the efforts of Abdukhalil Sharipov from the village 
of Khodzhai Alo to “purify” Islam. They also represent the effort by Tajik nationalist 
intellectuals to pry Sughd province away from its Ferghana (e.g., Uzbek) identity and 
link it more closely with the more solidly Tajik world of Bukhara, with its new musi-
cal center in the south. The academician Shukuri, who himself hails from Bukhara, 
has promoted the idea of Dushanbe as the “new Bukhara.” The entire project reveals
