The Unfinished Novel by Charlotte Brontё: 
the Disсursive Strategies of Neo-Victorian Fictional Reconstructions 
The paper explores specific genre modifications of the recent English neo-Victorian historiographic 
metafiction. Victorian literature viewed as a vast precedential text is a source for productive intertextual dia-
logue in retro-novels. The texture of retro-fictional reconstructions is characterized by discursive interactive 
nature, the contents qualified as double-coded.р

The examination of two modern reconstructions of the uncompleted novel “Emma” (1854) by
Ch. Brontё allows to conclude that their disсursive strategies are based on multilayer genre and stylistic in- 
tertextual components, also the development of poetic principles specific of the original fragmentary piece. 
The texts accumulate key socio-cultural concepts, extensive citation and interpretation of traditional themes, 
archetypes, and leit-motif imagery. Notwithstanding the propensity for mystification and sensational effect, 
and the synthetic genre composition of the plots, the sense of authenticity of the stylized modern narratives is 
being accomplished. 
 
The artful reconstructions of “Emma” by C. Savery and C. Boylan may be regarded as exemplary 
pastiche novels provoking prolific arty dialogue with the literary heritage of the “Brontё-land” considered an 
inimitable literary phenomenon. The discursive multimodal qualities of fictional reconstructions extend 
communicative rights for a reader, provoke creative interaction, give an opportunity to participate in the gen-
eration of text.

В процессе постепенного отмежевания от близких в формальном отношении модер-
нистских школ эстетика постмодернизма стремится к моделированию особой картины мира, 
отражающей постмодернистскую эпоху. Ключевая проблема эпохи – «экология культуры» – 
девиз, постулат и конечная цель новейшей литературы.
Исходя из положения о том, что новейшая литература эпохи постмодерна есть «ис-
кусство меняющейся перспективы, двойного видения» (Ч. Рассел), где герой, равно как и чи-
татель, – личность с «текучим сознанием», можно объяснить стремление современных рома-
нистов к критическому пересмотру социокультурных, исторических, жанровых стереотипов, 
к неустанному диалогу с прошлым, с классической литературой определенных периодов.
Таким классическим периодом и источником продуктивного интертекстуального диа-
лога на протяжении многих десятилетий является Викторианская эпоха – «золотой век» ан-
глийской литературы, представляющей собой огромный прецедентный текст
