The story tells about bourgeoisie society in France who have special system des a vivid of words, gestures and objects and master exercise of self-control, correct dressing and loyalty to family customs. Maugham presents the etiquette of English middle class society, their charmed and elegant life in villas and restaurants as well as their manners, social rituals. In other words, the author provides a vivid imagination of the behavior of English gentlemen who were really gentle or sham. It is portrayed a blustering fool character of person in the view of a gentleman as an example of Captain Forestier.
