The history of the development of the methodology for the study of phraseological units

The peculiarity of the semantics of phraseology, which is not deducible from the meaning of its constituent words, led to the search for such a method that would allow us to present the content of a stable unit quite clearly.

In studies of the meanings of phraseological units, it was taken into account that semantics a stable combination is not a simple sum of words, and the units that make up this combination cannot be rightfully called words (V.V.Vinogradov, 1947; A.I.Smirnitsky, 1956; V.P.Zhukov, 1965, etc.). A.V. Kunin calls the components of phraseology lexemes, or potential words: "Phraseological unit - this is a stable combination of lexemes with a completely or partially reinterpreted meaning" (1972,8). In modern phraseology, another term has been established - "component". This term was also used by A.I. Smirnitsky, who noted that "the components of phraseological units can and should be considered words, but only specifically used" (1956,207). Therefore, the analysis of the meaning of phraseological units should take into account the component nature of the general content and the possibility of desemantization of one of the components.
Let's turn to the history of the search for a method of studying phraseological units. At the suggestion of N.N.Amosova, phraseological units were studied by the contextual method, which took into account only the synchronous plan, speech use, the close connection between lexical and constructive elements (1963).
The method of relations was used by V.F.Rudov, who derived the meaning of phraseology on the basis of comparing stable units with words, phrases, sentences of nominative meaning (1958).
The variational method in the study of Phraseological units was defended by V.L.Arkhangelsk, who believed that the components of phraseology should be considered comprehensively, taking into account constant and variable components, with the study of real variations in specific acts of communication (1964).
