2.2 Interviews 
For the empirical part of this study, expert-interviews were performed. Interviews are useful 
for  collecting  in-depth  information  and  questions  can  be  explained  (Kumar,  2011),  which  can  be 
beneficial  for  complex  subjects  like  these.  Scientific  literature  is  mainly  focused  on  the  business 
environment  rather  than  the  academic  environment.  Conclusions  of  the  literature  study  regarding 
organizational changes in the business environment due to time and place independence of work will 
therefore be used as basis for the expert interviews, to determine if this corresponds to the expected 
changes in academic environments. 
Experts were asked to qualify and supplement the findings from the literature study on ICT-
enabled  time  and  place  independence  of  work  and  its  influence  on the  organization.  Furthermore, 
they  were  asked  how  the  changing  organizational  structure  and  culture  will  affect  the  academic 
workplace. This is done by the use of (semi-)structured interviews. Appendix 3 shows an overview of 
questions that were used during the expert interviews. 
Experts were selected based on their expertise in the field of time and place independence of 
work (or NWW), organizational change, and/or the workplace. In total, 17 experts were interviewed 
for the empirical part of this study in 16 interviews. One interview thus has two respondents. From 
the 17 experts, five had an international background, of which two were from the United States and 
three from the United Kingdom. Both respondents of the United States had a scientific background. 
Of  the  respondents  from  the  United  Kingdom,  two  had  a  practical  background  and  one  had  a 
scientific background. The remaining 12 respondents were from the Netherlands, of which five had a 
scientific background and the other seven a practical background. In total, eight respondents had a 
scientific  background  and  nine  respondents  had  a  practical  background.  The  wide  variety  of

respondents’  background,  expertise  and  nationalities  contributes  to  drawing  conclusions  with 
reasonable reliability. An overview of the interview respondents can be found in appendix 4.
