2. Methodology 
 
This  study  consisted  of  a  literature  study,  expert  interviews,  and  an  analysis  of  the  results.  The 
following paragraphs elaborates on the methodology used for this study.  
 
2.1 Literature study 
To  give  insight  in  all  aspects  concerning time  and  place  independence  of  work,  a  literature 
study  is  performed.  It  has  given  a  clear  view  on  the  aspects  ICT  (developments),  organizational 
structure and culture, and the workplace. Furthermore, literature study reveals the influence of ICT-
enabled time and place independence of work or NWW on the organizational structure and culture.  
Sources of information will be scientific articles obtained from peer-reviewed (management) 
journals. In addition, articles from Sociaal Cultureel Planbureau (The Netherlands Institute for Social 
Research),  Centraal  Bureau  voor  de  Statistiek  (Central  Bureau  of  Statistics  of  the  Netherlands), 
Eurostat, TNO, and similar institutions are used. Since not all needed information on NWW could be 
found in scientific literature, also non-scientific literature is used in this study to support the scientific 
findings.  Keywords  for  finding  articles  are:  facility  management,  ICT,  IT,  technology,  organization, 
organizational structure, organizational culture, office,  (academic) workplace, new ways of working 
(NWW), smarter working, and a combination of those words.
