1.1 Research background 
Major developments in the field of ICT have drastically changed both social life (e.g. Thomson, 
2005)  and  the  work  environment  (e.g.  Brill  and  Weidemann,  2001;  De  Croon  et  al.,  2005).  ICT 
solutions allow people to communicate with others and have access to information and knowledge 
on  every  desired  place  and  at  any  time  with  their  portable  device  (Lee  and  Brand,  2005).  For 
organizations,  this  means  that  employees  become  less  bounded  to  time  and  space,  affecting  the 
organizational 
structure
 and 
culture
 (Bijl, 2007). Beside the effects on the organization itself, working 
independent of time and place also affects the 
workplace
 (e.g. Van der Voordt, 2004; De Croon et al., 
2005).  Well-designed  workplaces  are,  among  others,  an  important  factor  of  job  satisfaction 
(Sundstrom,  1986;  Brill  and  Weidemann,  2001)  and  therefore  organizational  effectiveness  (Becker, 
1981;  Wineman,  1986).  The  workplace  thus  is  of  great  priority  for  Facilities  and  Services  of 
Wageningen UR.  
Time  and  place  independence  of  work  is  thus  concerned  ICT  (as  enabler),  the  organization 
(changing structure and culture (Bijl, 2007)), and the workplace (e.g. Van der Voordt, 2004; De Croon 
et  al.,  2005).  However,  effects  of  changing  organizational  structure  and  culture  caused  by  ICT-
enabled  time  and  place  independent  work  styles  on  the  office  workplace,  specifically  within  the 
academic environment, lacks attention for research. Time and place independence of work or New 
Ways of Working (NWW) is thus relatively new to academic environments. Knowing that the average 
occupancy  rate  of  academic  offices  is  30%  (Parkin  et  al.,  2006;  Brunia  et  al.,  2012),  NWW  can 
contribute to more efficiency in workplace design and thereby decrease use of space and costs.  
Facilities  and  Services  of  Wageningen  UR  is  responsible  for,  among  others,  providing 
(academic)  offices  workplaces  that  suit  the  activities  and  requirements  of  (academic)  employees. 
Therefore,  they  are  interested  in  the  effects  of  current  societal  developments  on  the  (academic) 
office  workplace.  With  the  increasing  possibilities  for  time  and  place  independence  of  work  and 
thereby changing organizational structure and culture in mind, Facilities and Services desires to have 
a research performed, focused on how ICT-enabled time and place independence of work affects the 
(academic)  organizational  structure/culture  and  thereby  the  academic  office  workplace.  The 
outcome of this study can be used as input for academic office design. For this study, time and place

independent  working  styles  is  a  collective  term  for  all  similar  terms  like  new  ways  of  working, 
smarter working, and flexible working. The focus of this study is the physical (academic) white collar 
office workplace, thereby excluding workplaces  like laboratories and other academic environments 
such as lecture halls and classrooms, and services like canteens or cleaning.
