1.5 Facilities and Services
FS describes itself as a professional service provider which supports both research and
education at Wageningen UR. They do this by building challenging and inspiring environments for
current and future employees and students. FS takes care of real estate issues, information
technology (IT), the Wageningen UR library, educational facilities, operational services, and
purchasing. Appendix 2 shows the organizational chart of FS.
Wageningen UR wants to anticipate on the expectations of their end-users. For FS this is,
among other things, translated in the focus on the rising trend of place and time independent style of
working (Wageningen UR, 2011). For example, FS is expanding their online support towards end-
users. For further developing the ICT support, Wageningen UR wants to invest in adequate and
reliable, specific ICT-services, which is in balance with the demand and wishes of their end-users
(Wageningen UR, 2011).
The IT-department of Wageningen UR is constantly rethinking ways to contribute to the
university broad strategies. Techniques are changing, which require new approaches. “We need to
get past ‘
How are we doing it now?
’, towards ‘
How are we doing what is asked from us now
?’”
(Brouwer, 2014). IT intends to learn from best practices. An example is the Bring Your Own Device
(BYOD) project. The best practice cases are taken into consideration for consultancy (FB-IT, 2014).
Since September 2011, the Actio building of Wageningen UR, which is home to FS, is
equipped according to new ways of working (NWW). In October 2014, the IT department has moved
into the Actio2 building, meaning that they also switched towards the NWW style. When
Wageningen UR decides to implement NWW to other buildings or departments as well, this will have
a huge impact on FS. Currently there are no concrete plans in expanding NWW, but it is not
inconceivable that this could happen in the future. As Sablik (2014), head of IT Infrastructure of
Wageningen UR, states: “
The question is whether traditional workplaces, as we know them now, will
still exist in a few years
”. These developments need to be thought through in advance in order to
anticipate on timely. The results of a recent study of Wageningen UR show that end-users want to
have availability to information and applications they need at any place and any time. If Wageningen
UR is not capable of providing these services, end-users will find their own solutions, which may be
unsafe (FB-IT, 2014). This means that, although IT is constantly actively developing their provided
services according to current needs of end-users, both IT and FS have to explore on what awaits
them in the future.
