Academic office workplace of the future 
 
Workplaces  will  still  show  a  certain  amount  of  appreciation,  making  it  in  the  future  at  least  as 
important to focus on functionality and atmosphere of the workplace (Resp. 12). To decide what the 
academic office workplace of the future will look like, one needs to look at how students currently 
work, since they are the employees of the future (Resp. 12). The current generation generally prefers 
collaborative work above individual work and are less bound to a physical location or setting (Resp. 
12). NWW is the only way of working the new generation knows (Resp. 15), so they do not require a 
transition  process  which  the  current  group  of  employees  requires  (Resp.  12;  Resp.  14;  Resp.  15). 
Therefore,  long  hallways  with  private  offices  for  teachers  and  professors  will  disappear  (Resp.  10). 
Academics will not have a fixed workplace, but a fixed environment; they will seek an environment 
that matches the phase of their research, making it important to look at functions and work activities 
(Resp. 17). In the future, more people will work as sole proprietors within an umbrella organizations, 
which  will  also  be  visible  within  academic  environments  (Resp.  3;  Resp.  12).  Flexibility  increases, 
requiring  more  flexible  work  environments  as  well;  one  must  be  able  to  switch  faster  (Resp.  12). 
More and more professors get mixed jobs, becoming part-time professors. Workplaces therefore are 
less  occupied,  making  it  not  fundable  anymore  to  offer  everyone  a  privately  owned  workplace. 
Furthermore, professors rather see money spent in good facilities (e.g. laboratories, research), than 
in a desk and room (Resp. 1).

The academic office workplace of the future characterizes itself with more social areas, more shared 
areas,  and  less  owned  areas  (Resp.  11).  It  will  be  focused  on  meetings,  whereby  organizational 
attachment is maintained since employees will come to the office. It will be an environment where 
students  and  teachers  will  mix  and  where  knowledge  comes  together.  Students  and  professors 
inspire  each  other  allowing  co-creation  to  occur,  instead  of  one-way  traffic  from  professors.  By 
creating these kind of open environments focused on collaboration, professors are more connected 
to what really goes on inside the technological and digital world in which the current generation is 
growing up (Resp. 10). Placement of coffee machines is important for creating accidental encounters 
and  informal  behavior  (Resp.  1;  Resp.  4;  Resp.  17), whereby  reference  is  made  to  a  study of Peter 
Vink, which showed that the right placement of coffee machines increases informal behavior (Resp. 
17).  
 
Resp.  5  claims  the  academic  office  workplace  of  the  future  will  look  like  a  model  that  she  has 
recommended for business organizations; a space with private offices around the edges, and a larger 
open area in the middle which has various kinds of equipment or technology or working areas. This 
layout  is the same  as the combi-offices  that Resp. 11  has recommended at  ‘physical office  layout’. 
The  private  offices  support  focused  and  concentrating  work,  while  the  middle  area  is  focused  on 
meeting  people  and  collaboration.  This  ensures  that  you  have  both  the  opportunity  for  informal 
encounters and concentration work. Since  people  will still have  private offices, focus lies on public 
spaces  (Resp.  5;  Resp.  8).  The  academic  workplace  of  the  future  will  consist  of  coffee,  Wi-Fi,  and 
electricity  (Resp.  17).  Attention  must  be  paid  to  the  emotional  and  psychical  side  of  humans,

meaning  keeping  attached,  monitor  and  guide  people,  and  notice  when  they  experience  struggle 
(Resp. 17).  
 
Office  environments  will  increasingly  make  more  use  of  technology,  creating  smarter  work 
environments in which all offered facilities will be optimally utilized (Resp. 12). Resp. 1 even claims 
the  academic  office  workplace  will  become  80  percent  virtual,  and  only  20  percent  physical. 
Therefore, the virtual workplace perhaps even becomes more important than the physical workplace. 
IT needs to stimulate collaboration and be accessible to third parties (e.g. BYOD). There will be much 
more online management of space (Resp. 11). Academics will collaborate more often with colleagues 
outside  existing  institutions  with  people  from  all  around  the  world,  which  influences  the  office 
workplace  itself  (Resp.  1;  Resp.  16).  Possibilities  of  virtualization  are  not  yet  optimally  used; 
education can become way more effective. The change of educational form, such as increasing use of 
Massive  Open  Online  Courses  (MOOCs),  makes  that  the  university  as  physical  appearance  will 
become  outdated.  Digitalization  of  lectures  decreases  the  need  for  lecturers  to  travel  to  the 
university. Furthermore, when Dutch students can follow courses of large international universities 
like Harvard or MIT, the question remains what will happen with the Dutch institutes (Resp. 1; Resp. 
16). If they want to pursue  the  higher  purpose,  they will collaborate  instead of compete  (Resp. 1). 
Resp.  3  claims  that  education  will  not  become  completely  digitalized,  since  social  contact  is  still 
desired.  There  will  thus  still  be  lecture  rooms,  offices,  and  meeting  rooms  for  students  and 
colleagues. The influence of digitalization of education on the academic office workplace depends on 
where the therewith saved time is spent on. If this means more time for research, there will be an 
increasing  demand  for  focus  areas,  but  if  there  will  be  more  guidance  and  discussions  between 
students and teachers, there will be more demand for meeting rooms (Resp. 3).
