We have listened to the beginning of the text in exercise c. So in that part we learned the short information on the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico, where English is spoken.
Now we are beginning reading the part of the text that gives information on the other countries and territories of the American continent population of which speak English.
Jamaica — a member of the Commonwealth. Its capital is Kingston, nationality — Jamaican. English is spoken, and a local dialect is also used.
Most of the population is of African and mixed descent;
other racial and nationality groups are Chinese, East Indian, Syrian, and European.
Barbados — a member of Commonwealth. The capital city is Bridgetown, nationality — Barbadian. English is widely spoken. Population is black, white and mixed origin.
Grenada — a member of Commonwealth. Saint George's, Grenadian, English is (he formal language and understood everywhere, but French-Afro is widely spoken.
Bahama Islands — The Commonwealth of the Bahamas. Nassau Bahamian, English is spoken as the only language. Black, British, Canadian and US descent.
Bermudas — British colony. Adm. centre — Hamilton, Bermudan or Bermudian, English is the official language. Black, or of mixed descent, the rest mostly -British in origin.
Dominica — a member of Commonwealth. Adm. centre — Roseau |, Dominican. English is Ihe formal language and everywhere understood, but French-Afro is widely spoken.
Antigua — a member of Commonwealth. Adm. centre — Saint Johns, Antiguan. English, black-while descent.

AMERICAN REGIONALISM
On every coin of the United States goverment are found three words in Latin: E pluribus unum. Into English this can be translated: "out of many, one." The phrase is an American motto which means that United States is one country made up of many parts,
The parts are the 50 states in the North American continent which extend to Alaska in the north and Hawai in the mid-Pacific. "Parts" are also the nation's many different peoples, whose ancestors came from almost every area of the Earth. The third meaning of the word "parts" is "the environments or the geographical surrondings of the United States". These environments are the area from the Penobscot River Valley in central Maine to the Cascade Mountains in western Washington state and from the beaches of southern Florida to the many-colored deserts of Arizona.
The United Slates is one single country, of course. Its center is the national government in Washington, D.C. Its national language is English, that is, American English.
How do Americans think of the United States? They often speak of it as a country of several large regions- These regions have been formed out of the history, geography, economics, literature and folkways that all parts share in common.
One common grouping creates six regions. They are:
New England is made up of the northernmost five states along the Atlantic seaboard plus Vermont and parts of New York.
The Middle Atlantic Region is composed of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania. Delaware, Maryland plus Virginia and West Virginia.
The South runs from Virginia south to Florida and 'then west as far as central Texas in all ten states.
The Midwest states are westward from Ohio to Nebraska and southward from North Dakota to Kansas, including eastern Colorado (the last is given in the West region).
The Southwest is made up of western Texas, portions of Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and the southern interior area of California (the last two states are given in the West states).
The West includes Colorado, Wyoming. Montana, Utah, California, Nevada, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Alaska and Hawaii. These eleven states are also called the Pacific West (six states) and the Rocky Mountain regions.
Within the above-mentioned six main regions are several kinds of subregions.
To explain the nature of regionalism more fully, it is necessary to take a closer look at each of these areas and the people who live there.
