The states of North or South Dakotas were named after the Dakota Indians. There Indians called themselves "Lakotas" or "Dakotas", that in their language meant "friends" or "allies" South Dakota has contained (near Castle Rock) the geographical centre of the United States, as well as the leading gold-mining centre, the town of Lead, The state is home for Indians, mostly Sioux.
Nebraska is rich in grass and grain. It is third in cattle (behind Texas and Iowa). Today Omaha is the largest livestock and meatpacking centre.
Kansas entered the Union as a free state in 1861. Farms produce the biggest winter wheat crop in the nation. Kansas City has the second largest number of stockyards and packing plants in the USA.
Minnesota, one of the Central Northwest states, has been the largest source of iron-ore in the USA. About a third of the population of the state is centered in the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Minnesota has a French motto: "L’Etoile du Nord", signifying the "Star of the North". Some other nicknames of Minnesota are: the "Lake State", "10.000 Lakes", the "Bread and Butter State," the "Wheat State."
Iowa produces a tenth of the nation's food supply, ranks first in pop-corn and oats, and is second in soya-beans. It is second only to Texas in cattle.
The "Hawkeye State" came to be applied to Iowa from the Indian chief Hawkeye. Another nickname of Iowa is the "Land of Rolling Prairie."
Missouri is rich in lead, and also in zinc and coal. Agriculture is Missouri's leading industry. Corn is the chief crop, but wheat, tobacco, soya-beans, and cotton are also grown extensively. The largest cities in the state are St. Louis and Kansas City.
Wisconsin is best known as the leading US dairy state (its nickname is "America's Dairyland"). Historians generally agree that the Indian word from which the present name, "Wisconsin", is derived is not known. Popular writers declare that it signifies "gathering of the, waters", or "meeting of the waters".
Illinois is a name both of the river and the state, a native name, given by the French to a confederate tribe of Indians and to the country which they inhabited along the Mississippi Valley.
Chicago, Illinois, has been the nation's railroad centre for many years, and now is one of the leading air travel centre.
Michigan is the world's largest producer of automobiles. The "Motor City" has been Detroit's nickname. The proper names Ford, Chrysler and Chevrolet are given to the types and models of American cars.
The "Auto State" is a nickname given to Michigan because of her numerous plants manufacturing automobiles.
Indiana is the state where lived such American writers as Theodore Dreiser (1871—1945) and Booth Tarkington (1869— 1946, the author of the novel "The Gentleman from Indiana", 1899). The largest city of Indiana is Indianapolis.
Ohio is nicknamed as the "Buckeye State" because of buck-eye trees which grow there. Cleveland, the largest city in Ohio, is an important iron-and-steel producer. The Cleveland Symphony is among the country's finest. Cincinnati (named in honour of Cincinnati, a Roman general) is the most beautiful inland city the USA.
