THE ENGUSH LANGUAGE IN AMERICA
Each of us knows that English is a widely spoken language in the world. It is a language-of the Englishmen. But now a large number of Americans, Europeans, Australians, Asians and Africans speak English. There are many English native speakers throughout the world.
Besides, English is a second and foreign language for mil­lions of people on the Earth.
At the following lessons we shall speak, read and listen to the texts where information about speaking English will be given.
The United States. Official name is the United States of America — the USA. It is a 'federal republic, a union of 50 states. The capital is Washington, D.C.
Nationality — American, or United States. Language — English is the official language. Spanish is also spoken in New York (chiefly Puerto Rican migrants), Florida, and along the Mexican border. Other minority languages include Italian, German, American Indian tongues, etc. Mast of the population are whites, then black, and other races-Canada is an independent federative state consisting of ten provinces and two territories, a member of the Commonwealth, headed by the Queen of Great Britain.
Ottawa, Canadian, English and French are both official lan­guages- Eskimo, Indian, German and some other languages are also spoken.
Most of the population is of British descent, then French origin, and Irish, German, Ukrainian, Scandinavian, Italian, Dutch , and Polish. Two per cent Indian and Eskimo, and less than one per cent Asian.
Puerto Rico. The territory of the island belongs to the USA. Most of Puerto Ricans live in the continental USA. The capital is San Juan, English and Spanish are the official languages, but Spanish is commonly spoken. The island is 885 miles south­east of Florida. Many of the people are of mixed Negro-Spanish descent.
