O HENRY
A well-known American writer 0. Henry (His real name William Sydney Porter) was born in 1862 in Greenboro, North Carolina, USA, in a middle-class family. His father was a doc­tor. The boy was brought up by his aunt because his mother died when he was small. After finishing school at the age of fifteen he worked for five years in his uncle's chemist shop. Then he went to Texas. His life was hard there as it was not easy for him to find work.
Porter worked on a farm for two .years, then in an office, and at last got a job in a small bank. During this period he studied languages and became interested in literature.
Soon he married and when a daughter was born. Porter was a very happy husband and father, but his happiness did not last long. His wife died. His little daughter was living with relations and was told that her father had gone very far away and would not return soon. He was sorry that the daughter would not receive any Christmas present from him. To get some money for a present he decided to write a short story. He published it m 189^. So Porter's daughter received a Christmas present. Porter 'signed the story "0. Henry" — the first pen-name that came into his head. Then he published many other stories. ' -' .
In 1901, he settled in New York and became a professional writer. His stories, with their unexpected endings, are built around interesting situations and are full of optimism, hunour and irony.
So 0. Henry preferred the traditional American "happy
end".
