THOMAS JEFFERSON
What kind of a man was Thomas Jefferson? He was' the author of the American Declaration of Independence, founder of one of the two major political parties, and third President of the United State.
He was born at Shadwell, in what is now Albermarle County, Virginia, on April 13, 1743. His father, Peter Jefferson, was an honored man in the community, and his mother belonged to the aristocratic Randolphs, one of the oldest families in Virginia.
Jefferson was so far ahead of his time in his social thinking that many of his ideas now accepted everywhere in the United States. For example, he thought of the freeing of slaves a century before Abraham Lincoln.
Jefferson graduated from William and Mary College in Virginia in 1762, chose taw as his profession.
In 1772, when he was 29, Jefferson married a beautiful widow (widow means "woman who has not married again after her husband's death), whose name was Martha (Wayles) Skelton- The Jeffersons began their married life at the then unfinished Monticello, a large house neer Charlottesville, Virginia, about 160 kilometers south of Washington, D.C. Today the beautiful home is a national monument.
For 17 days Jefferson sat in a room in the second floor of a new house at the comer of Market and Seventh Streets in Philadelphia, writing, reviving, polishing, and copying the declaration. Jefferson, who usually wrote with ease, now chose each word with great care.
The Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776 — a date now observed annually as the birthday of the United States.

THE SOUTHWEST
The four slates make up the American Southwest. Much of the Southwest is a land of wide open expansion. The Southwest was annexed by the USA from Mexico.
Arizona, the name of the state, is of Spanish origin (arid zone). Its official nickname is the "Grand Canyon State" be--cause of its principal tourist attraction, the Grand Canyon, one of the world's natural wonders. For unusual views of the canyon there are air tours — in a small airplane or in a helicopter.
Today the state is the residence of two Indian tribes, the Hopi and Navajo. Most of Arizona is high and dry.
New Mexico was named after Old Mexico because it was similar in many things to the other Mexico already discovered. New Mexico is known as the' "Cactus State"" or the "Land of Cactus".
The state is the nation's leading producer of uranium; it has more than two-thirds of the country's known uranium ore reserves. The first A-bomb (atomic, bomb) was produced at Los-Alamos, New Mexico, and expoded (1945) at Trinity Site near Alamogordo. Albuquerque is the largest city in New Mexico.
Oklahoma is today second only to Arizona in the number of Indian inhabitants. Historians agree that the name "Oklahoma" is derived from the two Indian words ("okla" — people and "humma" or "hamma" — red) meaning "red people." The word has other meanings too.
Most of the industry -is located in and around Oklahoma City and Tulsa.
The Oklahomans are often named "Sooners" because of the nickname of the state — the "Sooner State". They say that many of its inhabitants got into the territory illegally before Oklahoma was officially opened for settlement, they got there too soon,
Texas is the second largest of the US states. It leads the nation in the production of oil, natural gas, and cotton, and ranks high in commercial fishing and electric power.
The capital of the state is Austin. The second largest city in Texas, after Houston, is Dallas (named after George Mifflin Dallas, who became Vice-President under James K. Polk). The city is the financial and commercial centre of the Southwest. Dallas sprang into the world news in 1963 when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated (killed) there-
The name "Texas" is derived from the Indian name "Texia" or from the Spanish form "Tejas" signifying "allies, friends or confederates", a name commonly applied to Indian tribes. Texas is called "Lone Star Stale" because it was once a province of Mexico, then an independent republic, bore a single star in its coat of arms. It has also the nickname the "Jumbo State.", The elephant's name brought from London to America by circus owners in 1880s, was Jumbo.
