MEMORIAL DAY
Memorial Day, or Decoration Day, comes on May 30. It is a national holiday. Schools, offices, and banks close for the day. On May 30, Americans honour the servicemen, who gave their lives in past wars. Schools, clubs and churches decorate the cemeteries on this day. They put up flags on the graves of army, navy, and airmen.. They hold memorial services in chur­ches, halls, parks, and cemeteries. They hang up American flags on the main streets of the towns.
If you listen to the radio or TV on Memorial Day, you may hear patriotic songs, especially songs of the Civil War.-You may also hear a famous speech made during that war, the Get­tysburg Address. President Abraham Lincoln made the address at one of the great battlefields of the Civil War. Thousands of men were killed in the Battle of Gettysburg. They were buried in a soldiers' cemetery there. Abraham Lincoln made the ad­dress at the opening ceremony of this cemetery. The speech is only ten sentences long. But the last sentence of it — "the government of the people, by the people, and for the people" — is known to all Americans.
Memorial Day is a day dedicated to the memory of those who died for their country. All progressive Americans grieve for those who fell in the Revolutionary War, Civil War, World War II, Mexican War, World War I, the Korean War, the war in Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos.
The founder of Memorial Day was General John Alexander Logan. And the Memorial Day was held on May, 1868. Americans marched to the graves of Civil War soldiers, bring­ing flowers and singing "The Battle Hymn of the Republic", "John Brown's Body" and other civil War songs.
