RUSTАMNING OXIRGI KUNDАLIGIDАN (“Tushda kechgan umrlar” by Utkir Khoshimov)
Kuz oʼlim toʼshagida yotgan bemorga oʼxshaydi. Oyoq ostida kasalmand xazonlar ingraydi... Erta bahordan boʼtana boʼlib, shosha-pisha, qirgʼogʼiga sigʼmay oqqan ariqlar tiniqlashadi. Shuncha urinishlari zoe ketganini tushunib, olamga maʼyus boqadi... Endi suv tubida shodon chayqalgan maysalar emas, xazon koʼmilib yotadi... Yeru koʼkni kafandek oppoq tuman chulgʼaydi. Oqzulmat orasidan qargʼalarning xosiyatsiz figʼoni eshitiladi.
...Erta-indin osmonga motam libosini kiygan bulutlar chiqadi. Yer ustida uzoq charx uradi- da, achchiq-achchiq koʼz yoshi toʼkadi. Sim-sim yomgʼir yogʼadi: toʼrt kunlik umrida dunyoga sigʼmagan, oxir-oqibat jon taslim etgan tabiatga aza ochib, unsiz yigʼlaydi...
Men necha yoshga chiqdim oʼzi? Yigirma ikkiga?! Yoʼgʼ-e, axir men yetmish ikkidaman-ku! Balki sakson ikkidadir? Nima farqi bor?! «Donolar hayotni kuzaturlar jim...»

It is possible that he still considers himself a marked man. Certainly he was very unwilling to agree to this chess contest. He refused several times point blank, and it was only when the newspapers took it up and began making a fuss about the ‘unsportsmanlike refusal’ that he gave in. Gilmour Wilson had gone on challenging him with real Yankee pertinacity, and in the end he got his way. Now I ask you, Moosior Poirot, why wasn’t he willing? Because he didn’t want attention drawn to him. Didn’t want somebody or other to get on his track. That’s my solution—Gilmour Wilson got pipped by mistake.”
“There is no one who has any private reason to gain by Savaronoff’s death?”

Bu bellashuvda qatnashishni u sira-sira xohlamagan va taklifni bir necha marta rad etgan, lekin gazetalar, Savaronovning bu o‘jarligini sportchi uchun yarashmagan qiliq, deb shov-shuv ko‘targanlaridan keyin, u rozi bo‘libdi. Ikkinchi tomondan, Gilmor Uilson ham chinakam yankilarga xos tixirlik bilan uni bellashuvga chaqiraverib, axiri niyatiga yetibdi. Bilasizmi, mese Puaro, nima uchun Savaronov musobaqadan bosh tovlagan? Nimagaki, u omma e’tiborini o‘ziga qaratishni istamagan. Tag‘in biron kishi payimga tushmasin, deb qo‘rqqan. Mening fikrim shu — Gilmor Uilsonni adashib zaharlab qo‘yishgan.
— Ayting-chi, Savaronovning o‘limini tilovchi bironta g‘arazgo‘y shaxs bormi?
