Intentions
We enter most conversations with some sort of intention. This will
inevitably shape our listening as we listen out for things that will help us
achieve our goal or that will get in our way, and ignore or discard things
we deem entirely irrelevant to the intention. Intentions can cause
confusion, embarrassment or conflict if we’re not clear and explicit about
them, for example if a speaker and a listener have different intentions for
a conversation. I remember at the TED conference in Monterey in 1988
the sound system failed. My intention to listen and learn from what was
on the stage was unwavering, so when someone a few seats to my left
started shouting I felt annoyed and disapproving – until I realised that it
was the late and much missed Robin Williams, who then proceeded to
amuse and entertain the audience with brilliant improv comedy until the
technology was fixed and the show could go on.

Emotions
As we saw in the AGENTS section, emotions often colour and affect our
listening. When we’re upset, we don’t listen so well, while we can defuse
another’s upset by really making them feel listened to. Another example
is romance: when we’re in the first flush of love, our listening for the
object of our affection is both overwhelming and unconditionally
positive: the very sound of their voice can make our heart skip a beat, and
nothing they say is wrong. That usually changes as romantic passion
matures into a more sustainable, long-term loving relationship, where we
accept that nobody, not even the love of our life, is perfect. We’ll be
examining loving listening later in this book.
These, then, are the filters. Yours are different from mine, because we’ve
walked a different road. This observation chimes with recent neurological
research, which indicates that individual experiences shape our brains
through a process called hippocampal neurogenesis. In a 2013 German
lab experiment, 40 genetically identical mice were raised in a closed
environment. What transpired was fascinating: the mice diverged in their
behaviour, with some becoming more adventurous and others being very
conservative. The differences grew over time, despite identical
environment, diet and genes. The reason was that every individual
experience led to the growth of new neurons, creating individuality
through a sort of neurological butterfly effect. The same process operates
in human beings, which may be why twins with near-identical genes and
upbringings often lead very different lives and develop different
personalities, strengths and weaknesses. If individual experiences can
have such a strong effect, it is no surprise that one twin might be a great
listener and the other very poor.
I suspect this brain plasticity is part of the process of developing unique

listening filters. No 2 people have identical experiences, so the setting of
each individual’s filters is unique to that person – in other words, every
person’s listening is unique, which is a transformative realisation that we
will work through in detail in the section on created listenings later in this
chapter.
Taken together, the listening filters create our reality – the things we pay
attention to, and what we make them mean. It also means that, by
becoming aware of your own filters, you create the possibility of changing
them – of using them like the control surfaces on a plane to change your
reality for the better. Now that’s an exciting prospect! We’ll learn how to
do it in Chapter Four.
