LISTENING
You hear every sound around you, but you don’t listen to them all. During
the complex process of distributing the mass of sonic information to
various parts of your brain, you select what to pay attention to. This is the
first stage of listening: filtering. As we’ll see shortly, this filtering shapes
your whole experience of life.
The second stage of listening gives rise to my definition of outer listening:
‘
making meaning from sound’
. As you filter, you also interpret and create
meaning. Language is the most obvious example: we learn how to decode
a stream of sounds as words with meanings. If you listen to a language
you don’t understand at all, you will hear a wall of incomprehensible
vocal stylings, and you may get a fresh sense of how amazing this process
is. We tend to take for granted that our own language means something,
but there is nothing inherent in this: decoding language is a learned
process with enormous complexity.
We ascribe meaning to all sound, not just language. Instinctively, we
recognise potential danger in sudden or unexplained sounds. Consciously
and subconsciously, we create and access a huge mental library of sounds
and what they mean, to help us understand the world around us: the
sound of a car, train or plane; the alert sounds of our phones and
computers; our doorbell; all the richness of music; feedback sounds from
household devices and public street furniture; nature sounds; the
nuances of our baby’s vocalisations or the subtle inflexions in our loved
one’s voice.
The problem is that most people do not listen consciously at all. They are

not aware that they are 
doing
something, deploying a skill that can be
worked on, improved, refined and mastered. When you start to listen
consciously, you move to a whole new level of life experience and you
gain unprecedented levels of control over your happiness, wellbeing and
effectiveness. We will be learning how to listen consciously in the next
chapter.
