Attitudes
Less formal and grand than values, attitudes also shape listening. You
will have accumulated attitudes about many things from your individual
path through life. Some will be based on fact or first-hand experience,
while others may be arbitrary and even simply prejudice or bias. Most
people find it hard to listen to someone who has highly opposed attitudes
to their own, especially if they appear capricious or unjustified. Attitudes
such as religious bigotry, racism and sexism absolutely affect the way
people listen and respond to others, with serious and sometimes fatal
consequences that appear all too frequently in the news media
worldwide.
Beliefs/Assumptions
We saw earlier in the section on AGENTS how assumptions can colour
our listening to other people. Beliefs can do the same, whether they are
religious, philosophical or scientific. So much of human conflict and
cruelty has come from people refusing to tolerate those with opposing
beliefs, to the point where violence becomes justified in their minds. We
have seen this in the 21st century in vicious, uncompromising groups like
ISIS, who continue a long and tragic history of pogroms and ‘ethnic
cleansing’. Peace depends on the ability to tolerate those with opposing
beliefs. That requires trying to understand them, which is only possible if
we work hard at listening despite our filters.

Expectations
I try very hard not to form too many expectations, because expectation is
often the mother of resentment. Of course, we need to plan, and it’s great
to look forward to things, but if we set expectations too firmly – especially
of other people, and especially if we keep them secret – then we set
ourselves up for a fall, probably into pain and anger. Expectations can
affect our listening profoundly if things don’t turn out as we wanted them
to. As usual, the key is consciousness: if we are aware of having an
expectation, we can challenge it or be willing to let it go if life turns out
differently (and sometimes for the best!).
