Evelyn Glennie is the first person in history to successfully create and
sustain a full-time career as a solo percussionist, performing worldwide
with the greatest conductors, orchestras, and artists. She fondly recalls
having played the first percussion concerto in the history of The Proms at
the Albert Hall in 1992, which paved the way for orchestras around the
world to feature percussion concerti. She had the honour of a leading role
in the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Evelyn regularly provides masterclasses and consultations designed to
guide the next generation. With over 80 international awards to date,
including the Polar Music Prize and the Companion of Honour, Evelyn is
also a leading commissioner of new works for solo percussion, with more
than 200 pieces to her name from many of the world’s most eminent
composers. The film ‘Touch the Sound’ and her enlightening TED speech
remain key testimonies to her approach to sound-creation.
To this day, Evelyn continues to invest in realising her vision – to Teach

the World to Listen – while looking to open a centre that embodies her
mission: “to improve communication and social cohesion by encouraging
everyone to discover new ways of listening. We want to inspire, to create,
to engage and to empower”.
Evelyn Glennie: I knew I wanted to play in percussion and participate
in music making, but I thought that sound came through the ears. There
was this huge build-up of sound. It wasn’t that I wasn’t hearing sound. It
was actually that I was hearing too much of it and I couldn’t then separate
the sounds and decipher where they were coming from. So that actually
then affected my balance. And the sense of touch was just completely out
of the door, even though I knew what needed to happen, I couldn’t make
that happen because I was being directed by what was happening here.
Until one-day, one lesson … He happened to be striking a timpani. There
were 2 timpani in the room, or kettledrums. He struck the drum and he
just sort of paused for a moment. He said, “Evelyn, can you feel that
drum?” He said, “That drum is really resonating. Can you feel it?” And he
struck it and I said, “Well actually I think I can. I think I do. I think I do
feel this.” And he said, “Okay, right. Where are you feeling it?” And I
listened and listened and I said, “Well I think I’m feeling it in part of my
hand,” or wherever I was feeling it. He then said, “Evelyn, put your hands
on the wall of the room.” These were thin, just thin music rooms. Sure
enough, the amount of vibration that came through the wall and through
my hand was enormous. Then, he changed the pitch and then said,
“Right. Where are you feeling that?” And I said, “Ooh, from there to
there.” Then he changed the pitch again. “Ooh, that’s now less.” It was
getting higher and higher.
That completely changed the way I saw sound. I knew that I needed the
patience to listen to the sound after the drum had been struck. I knew
that, heavens above, this body was perceiving sound in many different
