Just as you are a listening for others due to your filters, so others are a
listening for you. This ‘created’ listening is a combination of their own
unique, individual listenings and any experience they have of you. In
other words, it is co-created.

Your contribution is your behaviour and way of being. How you are, and
what you do and say, create a listening for you, especially in those who
know you well. If you are always late for appointments, people may start
telling you the meeting is earlier than it really is, because their listening

for you is that you are a late person. This is where the 7 Deadly Sins really
play out: any of those behaviours that becomes habitual will impair the
way people listen to you and make it harder for you to be heard and get
your point across.
However, it doesn’t take repeated behaviours to change people’s listening
for you. Sometimes that can happen instantly, either for better or for
worse. In a world where reputation is becoming more and more
important in business and in personal relationships, it is now vital to be
aware of this process, as a salutary example shows.
In the 1980s, the UK’s leading jeweller was a nationwide chain called
Ratners, which was the default destination for any young couple planning
to get married. It looked unassailable until, in April 1991, its Managing
Director, Gerald Ratner, gave a speech to the Institute of Directors
conference at the Royal Albert Hall. He decided to be humorous and self-
deprecatory, but he badly misjudged the potential consequences. In his
speech, he joked that some of his company’s products were so cheap
because they were ‘crap’ and that their earrings were cheaper than a
prawn sandwich, but probably wouldn’t last as long.
He did not anticipate the backlash. The popular national daily
newspapers ran headlines that screamed ‘Rotners’. Customers (who
generally resent being depicted as mugs) boycotted Ratners stores. The
value of the group plummeted by £500 million and the company almost
collapsed completely. Gerald Ratner resigned and the company
relaunched with a new name, though it never regained its former market
position.
Instant changes in listening can also occur due to spoken or printed
gossip, which is why we have laws against libel and slander. However, the
law doesn’t protect individuals from having their reputation destroyed in

their own social circles, and damaged listenings can generate very
destructive behaviour, as Desdemona finds with tragic consequences in
Othello
. On the other hand, a single action can transform the listening for
a person from derisory to respectful, as T. E. Lawrence finds after the
taking of Aqaba in David Lean’s wonderful epic film 
Lawrence of
Arabia
.
