This is a phrase I often use to describe the human voice, because it
reminds me of the incredible capacity that we all possess and yet so often
take for granted. Think of what can be done with this extraordinary
instrument, from the throat singing of Tibetan Buddhist monks to the
soaring soprano of Maria Callas in her prime; from the visceral, distorted
wails of Robert Plant on LED Zeppelin’s 
Immigrant Song
to the sublime
scat signing of Ella Fitzgerald; from the sumptuous sound of the superb
choristers at King’s College, Cambridge to the mind-blowing Qawwali
vocal gymnastics of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan… and that’s just singing. In
speaking, imagine the lithe and dangerous baritone of Sean Connery
saying “Bond, James Bond”, or another famous baritone, the passionate
and inspiring Dr. Martin Luther King intoning “I have a dream…”, the
bass of James Earl Jones as Darth Vader, or the husky tones of Lauren

Steve? You just put your lips together and blow.”
The human voice is the most expressive sound maker on Earth, and
probably the most powerful sound too – it’s the only sound that can start
a war, or say “I love you.” It seems tragic to me that we do not teach our
children how to master this complex and supple gift. I’ve had people in
my workshops whose version of a shout is almost inaudible, or who are
deafening in one-to-one conversation; others whose voice is locked in a
tight, restricted throat, who speak in a lifeless monotone, or who seem
never to breathe at all… I hope they went home greatly changed, but what
a waste of this almost limitless capacity for the years before.
Your voice is probably capable of far more than you ever ask of it, in
range (from high to low), in power (from a whisper to a shout or a roar),
in resonance and depth, in projection and in expressiveness. We will be
exploring ways to unleash all that potential in Chapter Five.
