BUTTONS, TRIGGERS, BARBS AND
BOMBS
As we saw in the discussion off the AGENTS that affect our speaking and
listening, each of us develops a model of the world based on assumptions
that in turn derive from our experiences; we mature with an emotional
landscape and our own habits and systems for meaning-making. We also
develop our own sensitivities, and in relationship we become aware of the
sensitivities of our loved ones, families, friends and colleagues.
As a result, most people have buttons and triggers. I differentiate these 2
by their results. A button produces an emotional response – for example
say that thing to me, and I immediately become incandescent with rage. A
trigger produces a behaviour – for example, remind me of this memory or
put me in that situation and I will behave in a certain way.
When we deliberately, or perhaps instinctively, aim for other people’s
buttons or try to trigger them, we may use barbs or bombs. A barb is a
niggling, pointed remark that tends to hook the recipient because it’s
unkindly meant. A bomb is that phrase we deploy 
in extremis
– the one
that’s going to cause a nuclear explosion in the other person.
Involuntary emotions or behaviours can be very destructive, so it’s
generally wise to avoid pressing buttons, pulling triggers, casting barbs or
dropping bombs.
Exercise: Map the
minefield
As usual, consciousness is key. Take some time to reflect on your own buttons and
triggers. What sets you off? When did you last lose it, or behave in a way you later
regretted? Start a notebook on this and collect examples. In time, you will have a very
clear idea of your own sensitivities, and you can do the same for the important people
in your life. Life is not always a walk in a minefield, but it definitely helps to know
where the danger areas are so that you can avoid them.
