argues that human beings process information in 3 levels, associated with
the 3 main areas of the brain. A very simplified summary is below, again
giving some sense of the different language and emphasis you might like
to build into your speaking to make sure that you engage all sorts of
people equally well.

Think
The cerebral cortex is the centre of thinking. People who operate
primarily at this level are rational, and like to have details and numbers.
Your weather forecast for a ‘think’ person might go along these lines: the
chance of rain tomorrow is 55% and the predicted maximum temperature
is 14 degrees Centigrade, with gusts of 25 mph.
Feel
The limbic system in the centre of the brain is the engine of emotions and
sensory information processing. People who operate primarily at this
level are creative, emotive, and focus on relationships and sensations.
Your weather forecast for a ‘feel’ person might be: it’ll feel a bit chilly
tomorrow in the wind, and you may get wet.
Know
The basal region of the brain is the oldest part, sometimes called the
reptilian brain, and it deal with instinct and gut reactions. People who
operate primarily at this level are intuitive, no-nonsense and action-
oriented. Your weather forecast for a ‘know’ person would be: take an
umbrella, sweater and jacket tomorrow.
BRAINSTORMING
I doubt this is a new concept to you, but you may never have applied it to
what you say. It works particularly well when you are going to deliver a
long or complex speech, or you have multiple concepts to communicate.
You may be a mind mapping aficionado, in which case that tool will be
your preferred option. Start with the Big Idea and mind map all the nodes
until you are happy you have a structure that works and covers

everything.
The other option is to buy several pads of Post-It notes and find a large
wall and start writing on the notes. Just write. Any concept, idea, word,
issue, objection… absolutely anything that might be part of your talk.
Stick them all on the wall as you write them. When the writing stops, get
a cup of coffee, stand back and take in the wall. Little by little, start to
cluster the notes: you will spot key concepts or groups of notes that relate
to each other. The process will gradually gather steam until you end up
with a group of clusters. These are your core ideas. Photograph them for
safety, then move them into the order that seems right to you, going from
left to right across the wall. I usually favour going from the general to the
specific, but there are no rules about this. You now have the horizontal
(timeline) flow of your talk.
