This is particularly powerful if you are aiming to transform people’s
attitudes or perspectives, or move them to action, by engaging their
emotions. In my professional life, I often encourage brands to be clear
about their emotional message and deliver it congruently through all the
senses, because research shows that we buy brands, products and
services mainly emotionally, then we post-rationalise our purchases.
So, for example, speaking from a passion for justice can make a talk
compelling and unforgettable. I was lucky enough to be in the room for
Bryan Stevenson’s extraordinary TED talk about the imbalances in the
American justice system, which received the longest standing ovation I’ve
ever seen at TED. His passion was infectious; he changed our listening
and charged the room with fervour by speaking so resolutely and
passionately from this one place.
In the same way, speaking from compassion or pity can make a charitable
appeal much more powerful; speaking from affection can make a
wedding speech charming, touching and delightful; and speaking from
kindness and compassion is what makes the Dalai Lama so quotable.
Sadly, this works for the negative emotions too: speaking from hate,
righteous anger or fear can be very powerful and infectious, as so many
tragic victims of mob violence have found throughout history, and as we
are still finding today in the radicalisation of young people by extremists.
Speaking from is powerful. Use it wisely and well.
