I am a fan of clean language. This is not the practice of avoiding

expletives (though I try to do that too) but another piece of NLP-related
thinking that I think has serious value. It’s a system of questioning
developed by New Zealand-born psychologist David Grove in the 1980s.
Intended for counselling sessions but potentially applicable just about
anywhere with great benefits, clean language aims to eliminate as far as
possible the questioner’s metaphors, assumptions, paradigms and
sensations (MAPS) to leave neutral questions that don’t steer or influence
the questionee.
Most of us unconsciously pad our language with our own stuff, imposing
our world view, attempting to steer or control the other person’s answers,
or attempting mind-reading, for example: “Did you have the eggs and
bacon for breakfast, or the fruit?”
The clean version of that question would be simply: “What did you have
for breakfast?”
I think there is great mileage in being attentive to our language, stripping
out the unconscious or conscious manipulations we so often deploy by
rephrasing what someone said, asking leading questions, embedding
assumptions or generalisations or invalidating the other’s point of view.
To me, clean language involves saying exactly what I mean, and asking
without leading.

Here is a fascinating game to play with yourself: set your sights on 100 percent clean
language: say exactly what you mean without injecting assumptions, generalisations,
invalidations of the other or any form of manipulation or attempt at controlling the
answer to any question.
Spot the number of times you fall short each hour. Don’t get annoyed when you do:
there will be many! Nevertheless, the intention is the main thing and if you continue
the practice you will find the fail rate drops off as you get more sensitive to the

technique.
Beware: when you get good at this, it becomes very easy to set yourself up in
judgement of others. Remember, they are not playing the game!
