part of Sir Ken’s message – that children are born with plenty of naive,
self-confident creativity but that our education system crushes it out of
them. Humourous stories like this one can be an excellent way to
illustrate or communicate important points, so long as the humour is
natural, not forced, and you are comfortable with being funny.
Human stories, particularly ones from your own experience, can act as
powerful metaphors or concrete examples of your points, making your
arguments or ideas easier for people to understand than if they were
simply expressed as abstracts. I had the pleasure of collaborating with the
internationally acclaimed author and storyteller Jon Ronson on his 2012
TED talk ‘Strange answers to the psychopath test’. I commissioned and
then played all the musical samples and sound effects during this talk,
while my friend Evan Grant did the same with some powerful visual
animations. It was a new and captivating form of fireside tale, where
sound and vision enhanced Jon’s storytelling to spellbinding effect. It was
made all the more powerful by the fact that every word was true and had
really happened.
Jon is an expert storyteller, so I interviewed him to discover what he
believes the secrets of effective storytelling are. Check the panel for an

Stories don’t have to come from your own life, as Sir Ken’s example above
shows. You can appropriate them from friends, books or myths and
legends, or you can make them up from scratch.
There are certain storylines that clearly resonate with all human beings.
Researchers from the University of Vermont and the University of
Adelaide used sophisticated software to generate ‘emotional arcs’ for

1,737 works of fiction. The computer was looking for the frequency of
words ranked as happy (the top 10 were laughter, happiness, love, happy,
laughed, laugh, laughing, excellent, laughs, and joy) and unhappy (top 10:
terrorist, suicide, rape, terrorism, murder, death, cancer, killed, kill, and
die). When they analysed the data, they found they could classify 6
archetypical story arcs:
1. Rags to Riches (rise)
2. Riches to Rags (fall)
3. Man in a Hole (fall then rise)
4. Icarus (rise then fall)
5. Cinderella (rise then fall then rise)
6. Oedipus (fall then rise then fall)
‘Rags to Riches’ accounted for one fifth of all the books, but the most
popular with readers (as measured by downloads from Project
Gutenberg) were ‘Oedipus’, ‘Man in a Hole’ and ‘Cinderella’.
Many books nest several of these archetypes together to create more
complex arcs, but if you’re seeking a storytelling framework to hang your
own stories on, the simple archetypes form a useful starting point.
Inspirational stories need to end with a rise; cautionary tales may end
with a fall.
In sum, if you want to seize and hold people’s attention, become a good
storyteller.
Tip: You can use a story to prove a point or as an illustrative metaphor. Where
possible, use stories from your own life: it feels authentic and gives your listeners
an extra connection with you. Stories don’t have to be long or complicated. The
story I told on the TED stage about my mother, illustrating one of the 7 Deadly
Sins, was true, took only a few seconds to relate and illustrated the point very
powerfully.
