I still see these in meeting rooms, so let me give you some brief tips for
using them effectively.
Always use large block capitals. Practice, so that you can write clearly –
and horizontally. It’s strange but true that almost everyone who is
unpracticed in using flip charts creates lines of text that tail down as they
go from left to right on the sheet, which is not a good look.
You can use colours to indicate different types of content, such as key
points to remember, actions, quotes from the audience, or graphic
illustrations.
Don’t talk while you write, again because that would mean speaking with

your back to the audience. Talk, then turn and write in silence, then turn
and talk, and so on.
A very good use of flip charts on longer sessions like major trainings
lasting one or more days is to post the charts around the walls at the end
of each session or day, and then have people review them as they come in
for the next. It’s good use of the early part of the 1111 technique for
improving recall: review the material after one hour, one-day, one week
and one month and you will make the neural pathways much more solid,
improving your recall dramatically.
MEMORY
I would never dare to embark on a long talk using just my memory,
because I know all too well how fallible it can be. However, there are
people who can do that brilliantly. Most of them use permanent hooks
onto which they hang the structure of the talk and any key facts. These
hooks may be a set of learned words, or they may take the form of a
device called a memory palace – an imaginary building that you construct
and visualise vividly and repeatedly until it’s fixed in your mind, with all
its rooms and a route you always take through them. The trick is then to
associate the topics and facts you want to remember with the rooms or
with items in the rooms. For example, if you wanted to speak this section
of this book, you might visualise the front door as a script, then the tiles
of the hallway as cue cards, then the TV in the living room showing slides,
and so on.
There are many books on using your memory like this. I would simply
caution that you must be sure and practiced before taking this course.
Actors develop the ability to memorise lines for plays, and it may be that
this tool is the natural one for you. But please use a foolproof system like

a memory palace because if you try to memorise a long chain of content
and you lose a link, you will be cast adrift and find yourself floundering in
public.
By way of reassurance, I have seen this happen several times, and the
response is always the same: the audience starts clapping in an
encouraging way, and the person eventually gets back on track. We’ll
discuss having backup plans in the final chapter of this book. Using
memory is an ideal candidate for having a backup, just in case.
