WEEK 28
DAY 3
READ THE PASSAGE
As you read the passage, look for the central message, or theme.
Perhaps
Once there was a farmer who worked peacefully on his land, harvesting just enough crops to support
himself, his wife, and his son. The farmer never complained—even after long days in the field that
stretched out into long nights.
One day, the farmer’s only horse ran away. The farmer had used his horse for plowing, harvesting,
and bringing his goods to the market. When his neighbors heard the news, they came to visit him to
sympathize with his loss. They said they knew the farmer must be horribly upset. The farmer merely smiled
and replied, “Well, perhaps.”
The next day, the farmer’s horse returned, and it brought with it a group of wild horses. The envious
neighbors came by again, this time to admire the horses. They told the farmer how lucky he was, but the
farmer would only answer with a smile, “Well, perhaps.” That afternoon, the farmer’s son tried to ride one
of the wild horses and was thrown off, breaking his leg. The neighbors thought it was a terrible fate, but the
farmer responded, “Well, perhaps.”
In the morning, a government official stopped by all the houses in the area and took all of the young
men off to fight in a war. The farmer’s son, however, could not walk on his broken leg, so the official left him
behind. “Oh,” the neighbors cried, distressed at the loss of their own sons, “how very fortunate you are!”
And the farmer smiled and simply replied, “Well, perhaps.”
