WEEK 28
DAY 2
READ THE PASSAGE
As you read the passage, think about how the environment affects a reindeer herder.
Reindeer in Real Life
You may be familiar with reindeer from hearing about Santa’s reindeer at the North Pole. In real life,
however, most reindeer are raised by a group of people called Sami who are native to northern Finland,
Sweden, Norway, and Russia. Only an estimated 7,000 to 10,000 Sami still make their living by herding
reindeer, which provide meat for food, hides for clothing, and bones and antlers for tools. It is a difficult life.
Lars Mathis Gaup, a Sami who lives in Norway, has always herded reindeer, as do most of his family
members. Gaup’s lifestyle is far different from that of his ancestors. Once completely nomadic, the Sami
now live in permanent homes. They also depend on modern technology, from cell phones to snowmobiles,
to get around in the frozen North.
When spring comes, the Gaups follow the reindeer on a 60-mile annual migration across the flat, treeless
tundra to their grassy summer feeding meadows. During the migration, Gaup, his wife, and his children wear
reindeer fur and camp in a
lavvu,
which is a traditional small, cone-shaped tent. The reindeer themselves
control the movement of the group. They let the Gaups know when they are ready to leave and what time they
want to travel each day. Some things are out of anyone’s control, however. In the 1990s, much of Gaup’s
reindeer herd died because their main winter food (lichen) was frozen under ice. Gaup did not give up on his
reindeer, though, and the herd has since recovered. Although the work is difficult, cold, and unpredictable,
Gaup would never consider making his living any other way.
