The Tale of Rip Van Winkle
Rip Van Winkle was a kindhearted man who lived in a small village in the Catskill Mountains of 
New York in the mid-1700s. His neighbors and friends were very fond of him, but his wife often chastised 
him, as he never helped with the house or their young son. He would escape her nagging by going to the 
mountains to hunt.
One day, after hunting until he was exhausted, he fell asleep in a meadow. He awoke to find a 
mysterious man dressed in old-fashioned clothes who invited him to play a bowling game with him and his 
companions. Rip played ninepins with them, drank their brew, and fell asleep again. This time when he awoke, 
stiff and sore, he stumbled back down to the village. Strangely, it looked very different, and nobody seemed to 
know him. When he asked people if they knew Rip Van Winkle, they pointed to a young man in the street and 
said, “That is he.”
Rip asked the young man who his father was, and the man replied that his father had disappeared
20 years before. Flabbergasted, Rip realized that he must have slept for two decades and that this man was 
his son! The townspeople told Rip about all of the events that he had missed, including a war of independence 
with Great Britain. A wise, older resident explained that the bowler whom Rip met must have been the ghost of 
Henry Hudson, the sailor who had explored the area more than a century before. It was rumored that Hudson 
reappeared mysteriously every 20 years to keep an eye on his discovery. Rip lived the rest of his life in ease 
and idleness, treated by the villagers as a respected elder.
