WEEK 27
DAY 5
READ THE PASSAGE
As you read the passage, think about how the characters are alike and different.
Two Brothers
Long ago, there lived two brothers. Ted, the older brother, was married and had six children, while
Ned, the younger brother, remained single and childless. Both brothers inherited an equal share of their
father’s land, and both became grain farmers.
One evening, Ned started to worry about his older brother. “Why should I have as much land as he
does when he has six children to care for?” he wondered. Ned decided to secretly bring some of his own
grain to Ted’s house later that night.
Across the road, Ted started to worry about his younger brother. “Why should I have as much land as
he does when he will have no children to care for him in his old age? He should make money now, so that
he will not have to worry when he is old.” Ted decided to secretly bring some of his grain to his younger
brother later that night.
The next morning, each brother was surprised to see that he still had the same amount of grain as he
did before. Each decided that he must not have given away as much as he thought he had. Ned and Ted
each secretly carried more grain to the other later that night. But then, they awoke to find that they still had
the same amount of grain! For a third time, each brother carried grain to the other brother’s house in the
dark of night. However, this time Ted and Ned saw each other approaching, and they dropped their grain
and embraced each other.
