Sometimes, it can be difficult to follow a story if the setting changes. You can reread the story
to make sure you did not miss any key events.
When students have finished reading, direct them
to complete the skill and strategy practice activities. Review the answers as a group.
DAY
2
Remind students of the 
Character and Setting
skill. Say: 
In nonfiction, the settings and 
characters are real places and real people. You can study a real person’s actions, words, and 
thoughts in the same way you would a fictional character from a story.
Tell students they are 
going to read about real-life reindeer. Then remind students of the 
Visualization
strategy (Week 
3). Say: 
The passage describes what life is like for people who raise reindeer for a living. Make a 
mental picture of where the people and reindeer live. As you read, visualize the land, weather 
conditions, and activities of the herders. 
When students have finished reading, direct them to 
complete the skill and strategy practice activities. Review the answers together.
DAY
3
Review the 
Theme 
skill with students. Say:
 Authors can share a theme by constructing their 
stories or text around a central message. You can find the theme by thinking about what 
message the author is trying to share with readers. 
Then remind students of the 
Monitor 
Comprehension 
strategy. Say: 
As you read, take notes about what the possible theme could be. 
When you have finished reading, review your notes to see if your initial ideas match your final 
theme idea. Often, a theme will be hidden until the end of a passage. 
When students have 
finished reading, direct them to complete the skill and strategy practice activities. Review the 
answers together.
