What Goes Around
Milo was on his way to something very important—his first job interview. At sixteen years old, he 
realized that he needed to start saving some serious money to help pay for college. His best friend’s 
mother knew someone who was looking to hire a gardener. The connection was close enough to get him 
the interview but certainly not close enough to guarantee him the job.
Milo had just gotten on his bike when he heard yelling from across the street and turned to see a little 
dog scampering between cars. “Ginger, stop!” shrieked Pam, the dog’s owner, now dodging cars herself, 
empty leash flying behind her. Milo jumped off his bike, bent down, and caught the dog in a flying tackle. 
The owner, breathless but relieved, quickly caught up. “Ginger keeps escaping from her collar to chase 
after bikes. Thanks so much for catching her. I wish I could return the favor.”
Thinking it was time for a new collar, Pam carried her pup to the pet store. She recognized the elderly 
man in front of her in the checkout line. Thinking about the help she had just received catching her dog, 
she said, “Let me carry that heavy cat food bag for you, Mr. Chong. Take my arm and tell me how your cat 
is doing.” They chatted about their pets until they reached Mr. Chong’s bus stop.
Mr. Chong thanked Pam for carrying the bag. He sat on the bench next to a harried woman frantically 
digging through her handbag. “I can’t believe I didn’t check my coin purse before I left my house,” she 
muttered. “I’m 50 cents short of the fare, and I’ve got to get to work. I don’t suppose I could borrow half 
a dollar?” she asked Mr. Chong, who was glad to pass on the thoughtfulness.
Still smiling from the bus-stop stranger’s generosity, Ms. Vega arrived at her job to find her first 
appointment waiting for her in the office lobby, dusting dirt off his sleeve. “Hi, Ms. Vega. I’m Milo, and 
I want to thank you for considering me for the gardening job.”
