The Air Out There
Even after 12 years of commanding the Phoenix Colony, Captain Rothstein never tired of watching the 
views from the observation room. Ensign Knobbs had awoken her at 0400 with news that the life-support 
warning system had identified an imbalance in the air. Captain Rothstein had been working all day with the 
engineering team to make sure the air quality returned to normal. The problem was settled long after 
midnight, but Captain Rothstein did not go back to her chamber. Feeling almost too tired to rest, she came 
to the observation room instead.
Captain Rothstein clicked a button to zoom in on one small area of the view—a distant planet that had 
a halo of gases. It reminded her somewhat of Earth. She felt a sharp longing for a planet she had never 
known firsthand. No one aboard the colony had been born yet when the ship was launched. She had often 
seen footage in the computer’s storage bank of Earth’s terrible final days, as people fought bitterly while 
the spaceships left. Captain Rothstein’s grandfather had been one of the lucky ones who survived. When 
she was young, he used to tell her about life on Earth, amazing her with stories about what it was like to 
stand on solid ground and breathe the fresh air there. Captain Rothstein inhaled deeply, enjoying the clean 
sensation in her lungs. She wondered if Earth’s air had felt different, and she felt another pang of regret 
that she would never know the answer.
A sudden jolt rocked the colony and a bright flash lit up the viewing screen. Captain Rothstein 
recognized the impact. It was caused by one of the small meteors that had been bombarding the Phoenix 
for several days. She turned off the viewing screen and hurried back to the control room, confident that 
she would be able to solve any problem the Phoenix might face—except homesickness.
