KAFKASYADA LAHIÇ VE LAHIÇLILAR
The Town of Lahij and the Lahij People
From ancient times until today, the Caucasus has been home to many nationalities. Having served as one of the main roads for migrants during various eras, this region holds not only local peoples but also immigrants. These migrants who lived among the native groups and mingled with them from a socio-cultural perspective increased the population of the area, and new nationalities emerged as a result of migrants’ mixture with local groups. Researchers believe that the nationalities of the Caucasus speak over forty languages and dialects. The groups living here are divided into three groups:

• 
  Turkic peoples: Azerbaijani, Karachay, Balkar, Kumyk, Noghay.
  
• 
  Indo-European peoples: Tat, Talysh, Armenian, Mountain Jews, Ossetian, and Russian.
  
• 
  Caucasus language peoples: Georgian, Abkhazian, Adyghe, Circassian, Kabardian, Chechen, Ingush, Lezgi, Avar, Dargin, Lak and others.
  

The Tats, an Iranian-language people, were brought to the Azerbaijani region of the Caucasus during the Sasni period. They lived along the coast of the Caspian Sea, from Absheron to Guba, and later some of them also migrated to Shirvan and other regions of Azerbaijan. Among those is the group of Tats known as Lahij.
The Lahij people, a large majority of whom live in the Ismayilli region of Azerbaijan, are a Shia Muslim group. Some historians believe that they originated from the Lahij region of Iran and that their name is a reflection of that fact.
The town of Lahij is one of the most well-known places not only in Azerbaijan but in the entire Caucasus because of its art. From ancient times until the last century, many types of art were practiced in Lahij and their crafts were sold in world markets.
In the article, I will introduce the readers to written sources about the town of Lahij and my own collected materials.
