Chan P O, & La Brooy R, 1997, Design for Assembly, (Continuing), The thesis integrates existing work on the subject of DFA whilstanalysing and automating existing works for use in the field.The project uses wire-frame modeling to elecit parameters required asinputs to Boothroyd's work. It also develops a front end interface forthe engine of Jiang and La Brooy. The work extends to become CAD independent by using IGES as a universal interface toexisting engines.
Cheetham W, & La Brooy R, 1997, The Optimisation to Two-dimensional Shapes on Laminae, (Continuing), The project dealt with the compaction of two-dimensional shapes onto two-dimensional planes. Optimisation is measured by the minimisation of wastage. The methods of Simulated Annealing and GeneticAlgorithms have been used to convergethe algorithms. Irregular plates and irregular parts have been used. The algorithms can nest around blemishes in the laminae. The project has been funded by the CRC for IMST and is intended for use in the steel industry.
Chen Y, 1997, Performance Improvement of the Computer Numerical Control Electro-DischargeMachine, (Continuing), This thesis presents the development of a theoretical model for anelectro-discharge machining process. Equations to calculate the material removal rate and the tool wear rate and also to estimate the surface quality are introduced. The material rate, machining accuracy and surface finish are related to the discharge energy.

As part of this project, software for systematically storing this knowlege in the form of product and process model will be developed for future use. The purpose of the softwarewill be to reduce design mistakes and unnecessary reworking.

Gan W C, 1997, Robotic Polishing of Moulds for Rapid Tool Manufacture, (Continuing), The aim of this project is to develop an automated polishing system based on an intelligent software generating polishing paths from CADfiles. The polishing paths are downloaded and executed by a roboticmanipulator. A novel feature of this project is online inspectionof the mould surface allowing for localised reprocessing as necessary.
Hadzic R, 1997, Optical Fibre Embeddability in Carbon Fibre Composite structures, (Continuing), This project will focus on the effect of embedding fibre optic sensors in composites. The anticipated outcome of the research is the recommendation of suitable optical fibre specification for embedding purposes in compositematerials with limited macroscopic consequences on the host material.

The forging pressure will beestimated and the pattern of deformation will be drawn in order toassist forging a die design or to predict the success or failure of the process at the design stage.
Ma L, 1997, The Design and Control of an Air-Jet Compaction System used in Manufacturing Composite Components, (Continuing), The aim of this project is to develop an automated system in order to meetindustry requirements of manufactuirng composite structures which are made frompre-impregnated plies or dry fabric. The core developments of this project are the design and control of the air-jet nozzle which acts as the end-effector of the robot's arm.

Both experimental and theoretical studies are conducted to find the parameters that contribute to the formation of wrinkling, as well as the methods that prevent it.

Panwar D K, 1997, Implementation of Computer Vision in Flexible Cell (FMC), (Continuing), The project will study the implementation of a computer vision systemwith emphasis on pattern recognition and matching in FMC. Software will be developed to perform the matching and recognition of a product shape, for inspection and comparison with specifications,from the initial raw material to the finished shape.

The joining process must be controlled in order to maintain a precise alignment of the two parts, using optimal mechanical and microstructure properties.

This form of system provides automatic feedback adjustments to machine parameters, based on the output of product data.

This project will develop OpenGL techniques for the rendering of complex objects described in terms of boolean operations. Xia R S, 1997, Mechanics of Metal Cutting for Multi-diameter Drills, (Continuing), In this research project, multi-diameter drills made of high speed steel (HSS) are studied. An experimental system has been set up to measure the drilling forces during the machining operation. The topics studied are the cutting process, the life of the multi-diameter drills, and how they are affected by the manufacturing parameters.

The equation could be used to analyse the filmformation process in liquid lubricated plane strain forging.
Zeng X M, 1997, Critical Conditions of Wrinkling in Deep Drawing at Elevated Temperature, (Continuing), A theoretical model has been developed to predict the critical conditions ofwrinkling and the number of wrinkles both at room temperature and elevated temperature. The theoretical solution for predicting the critical conditionsof wrinkling is consistent with the experimental results.
Zhang M, & La Brooy R, 1997, Minimisation of Wastage in Aerospace Applications, (New), The project considers adaptation of nesting in composites.The requirements of composites are morecomplex than nesting on two-dimensional lamina due to the strengthrequirements of composites. This translates to restrictions on allowed movements in the plane. The project is concerned with minimising wastage of an expensive parent material by intelligent means.

The design and development of a computer controlled moving table, in two directions (x,y) under the laser beam have been carried out.
