Research topics

Anderson D, & Wilksch P A, 1997, The design and application of a dual imaging Fabry-Perot interferometer, (Continuing), A high-resolution imaging spectrometer consisting of two Fabry-Perot etalons in series with a charge-coupled array detector has been constructed. Alignment, control and data acquisition are performed by computer, and the spectrometer can be tuned over a wide range of wavelengths and resolutions, making it a very general-purpose laboratory instrument.

Biddle G, Paterson P J K, & Flavell T, 1997, Influence of Alloy Composition, Casting and ThermomechanicalProcessing Variables on Anisotropy of Aluminium Can Sheet, (Continuing), Crystal anisotropy is major area of study in solid state physics. A literature search and industrial inquiries have shown that this project is one of the first complete studies in the world to investigate the changes in crystal anisotropy in a modern production line for aluminium alloys.

Bijok M, Flavell T, Biddle G, & Paterson P J K, 1997, Effect of grain refining on texture development during the hot roling of cansheet alloy AA3004, (Continuing), This KAAL funded project examined the qualitative effects of three methods of grain refining on the evolution of texture during hot rolling and its relation to producing minimum earing and thereby reducing scrap.

Bryant G, Francis P, & van Megen W, 1997, Crystallisation in multicomponent colloidal suspensions, (New), This project involves the construction of a new high resolution spectrometer to study crystallisation in two component mixtures of hard colloidal pat\rticles

Bryant G J, Thomas J C, & Horn R G, 1997, Charging Mechanisms at NonPolar Liquid/Solid Interfaces., (Continuing), Colloidal suspensions in nonpolar liquids are widely used in a range of products(eg inks, paints). There is evidence that electrostatic forces between particlesplay a key role in determining the behaviour of such systems, but ourunderstanding of the charging mechanisms in nonpolar liquids is poor. The aim ofthis project is to study these fundamental charging mechanisms, in order toimprove our understanding of the properties of nonaqueous colloids.

Bryant G, & van Megen W, 1997, A light scattering investigation of cooperative motions in colloidal glasses., (New), Glass formation is a poorly understood phenomenon. In a glass, particles are free to move only very short distances before bumping into their neighbours. However, it is known that over long periods of time large scale particle motion does take place, and limited crystal growth can occur. In this project we aim to use light scattering to examine the mechanisms by which this molecular rearrangement takes place in colloidal glasses.

Bryant G, & Koster K, 1997, The effects of vitrification on model biological membranes, (New), When biological cells are dehydrated or frozen, membrane rupture normally occurs, leading to cell death. However, some species can survive. One mechanism for this is the ability of the interior of the cells to vitrify. Why vitrification can reduce membrane damage is still debated. This project aims to measure the physical properties of vitrified solutions, and conduct measurements on model membranes in the presence of vitreous solutions to elucidate some of these mechanisms.

Burt T, Wilksch P A, & Allan R, 1997, Infrared spectrometry of paper properties, (Continuing), Diffuse reflectance spectra obtained from a wide range of paper samples have been analysed to establish links between spectral features and the chemical and physical properties of the samples. On the basis of this information, prototype instrumentation has been designed and assembled to permit rapid, on-line, nondestructive evaluation of key paper properties.

Daivis P J, & Todd B D, 1997, Molecular rheology of polymer melts, (New), The goal of this project is to develop the technique of non-equilibrium moleculardynamics as a useful tool for predicting the rheological behaviour of modelpolymer melts, and to use it to directly observe and understand the cooperativedynamic behaviour of chain molecules as a function of molecular architecture, meltcomposition and flow conditions.

Daivis P J, & Todd B D, 1997, Realistic modelling of polymers using the freely jointed chain model with excluded volume., (New), The aim of this project is to find ways of directly relating microscopic parameters of the freely jointed chain model of polymers with excluded volume to real experimental data and to devise easily simulated, but realistic models for polymers.

Daivis P J, 1997, Molecular Rheology of Polymer Melts, (Continuing), The goal of this project is to develop the technique of nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) as a useful tool for predicting the rheological behaviour of model polymer melts, and to use it to directly observe and understand the cooperative dynamic behaviour of chain molecules as a function of molecular architecture, melt composition and flow conditions.

Frost C R, Kibble M, & Paterson P J K, 1997, Development and Application of a Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy System at RMIT, (Continuing), Using commercial hardware components a quadrupole secondary ion mass spectroscopy system was assembled in an ultrahigh vacuum system. The novelty in this system involved integrated control of both data collection and vacuum system by interfacing with a PC. This instrument yielded results comparable with a commercial system costing nearly ten times more. This instrument has since been given to the RMITt Surface Physics group.

Ginsburg A, Hill M, Robinson N, & Sidors D, 1997, Heart Conduction Abnormalities: Detection and Quantification. (A New Method for Quantitative Evaluation Of the Standard ECG), (Continuing), The project aims to develop further a new instrument(hardware/software)for the rapid, simple and accurate evaluation of current heart health status on the basis of a standard electrocardiogram(ECG). A computer assisted program has been developed to detect and quantify the level of conduction abnormalities and could become an effective tool for quantitative analysis of the standard ECG.This project was supported by Grant for research from the Faculty of Applied Science

Gorman J D, Akelekav D B, Bhargava S, & Paterson P J K, 1997, Metal Doped Aluminosilicates, (Continuing), This on going study examines the chemical state of various metal dopants principally using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Gorman J D, Lee B, Johnston P N, & No K S, 1997, Characterisation of Strontium Titanate Films, (New), These microelectronic memory materials were investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Hydrogen Elastic Recoil Detection Analysis to determine valence and stoichiometric variation throughout the films as well as H content. Collaboration with Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology.

Gorman J D, Jun B H, Johnston P N, & No K S, 1997, Characterisation of Deposited Silicon Nitride Films, (New), This study examined the chemical state and stoichiometric homogeneity of deposited Silicon nitride films principaly using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.Collaboration with Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology.
