Introduction to the course
(20 minutes)

1.1. Presents the name of the academic discipline and general theoretical data on its relation to modern linguistics; Gives information on the number of lectures and practical classes.

1.2. Provides basic information on the structure of the academic course: themes of lectures, topical problems of the scientific discipline, prospects for its further development;

II-stage
Basic

2.1. For the purpose of activation of the students’ knowledge the teacher gives a series of questions:
What do you understand by the notion “translation”?
What is the role of translation studies in modern society?
How can you characterize the translating process?
Why do we need a special science studying the problems of translation?
The teacher comments on the students’ answers.

2.2. Presents the slide entitled “General and special theories of translation” (Slide 1) and makes comments on the linguistic nature of translation.

Studies the structure of the Slide 1, makes notes on its contents in the copy-book and expresses ideas on the role and functions of the scientific discipline in studying the language

2.3. Gives information on the theoretical bases of translation studies: the aim and objectives of the academic course, the main problems of the theory of translation and asks the students’ viewpoints.

2.4. Presents the key points of the main trends in the theory of translation and makes comments on their role in the development of the scientific discipline.

2.5 Presents data on the types of translation and basic criterion for their classifications. (Literary Translation. Informative Translation. Written and Oral Types of Translation. Consecutive Translation. Simultaneous Translation) (Slide 2) and asks the students to express their opinions about the intermediate types of translation.

2.6 Outlines the basic points on the translating process as a special type of communication, presents the model of translating process (Slide 3) and asks the students to express their opinions about the inter-lingual and cross-cultural features of translation.

3.1. Makes conclusions concerning the basic points of the lecture. Gives questions to the students about the introductory information on the scientific discipline.
