Abstract.
The article deals with the terminology related to media education, the definition of
the concept of "media competence" of technical university students in the process of teaching a
foreign language.

In modern pedagogical research in the context of informatization of society, more and more
attention is paid to the use of media resources in the youth environment. Professionally oriented use
of modern information technologies of the Internet system becomes an urgent need for future
specialists of the labor market. Thus, the co-evolution of the information and educational space
makes it an urgent task to develop the media competence of University students.
Therefore, one of the main tasks of professional education of a future specialist is to train a
highly qualified professional who can adapt to changing conditions, be able to communicate, extract
professionally important information and exchange it, including in a foreign language. In the
context of mass communication, the future specialist will have to use modern means of
communication and work with the information resources of the Internet, which is marked by the
predominance of a foreign-language communication environment, which also indicates the need to
form information and communication qualities in the process of studying at the University. In this
case, a foreign language plays an important role as a means of forming not only the personality of
students, but also the skills to work with information, i.e. media competence.
Pedagogical support for students' acquisition of value orientations in the media space, which
are an integral part of their living space, is becoming one of the priority educational areas. We are
particularly interested in technical university students, as this category contributes to the socio-
economic development of the region and the country as a whole. The concept of "media
competence" is interpreted differently in different sources. For example, media competence is
considered as "the result of media education, a level of media culture that provides an individual 's
understanding of the socio-cultural, economic and political context of media functioning, which
indicates their ability to be a carrier and transmitter of media cultural tastes and standards,
effectively interact with the media space, and create new elements of the media culture of modern
society".
Thus, the majority of foreign teachers and scientists dealing with the problem of media
education, considering it as a set of knowledge and skills necessary for the development of a
creative personality, able to openly express their views, able to find and justify their own
professional solutions, feel free to propose unconventional ideas, to adapt quickly to changing
production and social situations, to be able to find, analyze information, skills to competently use
information. In this regard, the emphasis in the study of academic disciplines is transferred to the
process of learning itself, its organization and management. As you can see, modern science has
created prerequisites and accumulated a certain fund of humanitarian knowledge for analyzing and
solving the problem of developing students' media competence.
However, analyzing the historical and pedagogical literature, we concluded that researchers
and teachers still do not see the difference between media education and the use of information
technologies, distance learning, and media technology in the educational process of schools and
universities. Therefore, using the example of some media technologies, we would like to show how
meta-competence can fit into the process of training future specialists, in particular, when teaching a
