TYPES OF COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCIES: WAYS OF THEIR 
ENGLISH LANGUAGE APPLICATION IN MEDICAL SCHOOLS USING 
PROFESSIONAL FICTIONAL FILMS

Annotation:
The article covers 4 components of communicative competence. 
A description of all types is given, in general identity, and their practical application 
in the study of English on the formation of communicative competence by medical 
students. Possibilities of studying the grammatical and semantic basis of the English 
language are touched upon. Examples from local and authentic films in English are 
provided. Their analysis is carried out with an explanation of their implementation in 
practice by medical students.

Communicative competence is a term in linguistics which refers to a language 
user's grammatical knowledge of syntax, morphology, phonology and the like, as 
well as social knowledge about how and when to use utterances appropriately.[1] The 
term was coined by Dell Hymes in 1966 [2]. Later, in 1980 Michael Canale and 
Merrill Swain identified these four components of communicative competence [3]:

Grammatical competence 
2.
Sociolinguistic competence
3.
Discourse competence
4.
Strategic competence
1. Grammatical competence is actually language proficiency. It includes the 
integration of form and meaning of language, maintaining its bilateral 
communication. It involves the following levels: phonological (intonation, rhythm, 
etc.), lexical-semantic (vocabulary) and grammatical (structure of words, ways of 
their combination, etc.). This type of competence is the basis of communication, it 
would be impossible to achieve understanding between people without this unit. For 
successful mastering this type of competence among medical students, it is 
appropriate to use professionally designed fictional films on medical topics of non-
