Key - words
Comparatively frequent, among shiploads of yellow sand and sulphur, witnesses, comprehension and response of reseptors, Simultane, faithless and stolid race, unacceptable” translations, to subvert basis, the wide diversity of text types.
In this period there were translation of Dante’s “New Life” and the works of Italian poets done by Dante, Gabriel Rosette, Virgil’s “ Aeneid” and Iceland Sagas” by William Morris, the poems of French poets Fransua Viyona and Teophil Gotye by Suinbery, the poems of Italian poet Djakimi Leoparti and German poet Heinrich Heine by James Thompson. The works of Mopassan, Ibsen, Dostayevskiy and Chekhov were translated. Among the theoretical works one should note the article About Homer’s translations” by Mathew Arnold, which received a wide comment in that time.
Two centuries ago translations from German were comparatively frequent in England: Luther’s “Table-talk” is still a classic in our language: nay, Jacob Bohme has found a place among us, and this is not as a dead letter, but as a living apostle to a still living sect of our religionists. In the next century, indeed, translation ceased but then it was in a great measure, because there was little worth translating.
Translators are of the same faithless and stolid race that they have never been: the practice of gold they bring us over is hidden from old but the most patient eye, among shiploads of yellow sand and sulphur.
The translation of the “ Authorized Version” warn in their preface “ he that meddleth with men’s religion in any part, meddleth with their custom, nay, with their freehold culture, if it functions as that culture’s central text, translations of it will be scrutinized with the greatest of care, since “unacceptable” translations may will be seen to subvert basis of the culture itself. This is what Sir Thomas More accuses Tyndale of when he makes the charge that Tyndale changed in his translation the common known words to the intent to make a change in the faith.
About the art of translation published in Vrotslavin 1955 in which many interesting articles about separate problems of history theory method and practice of literary translation are included. However in this interesting and useful collection one can also observe the absence of generalizing and exact methodology. Voytasevich’s book “ Introduction into the theory of translation” which was published in the same town IN 1957 and showing the attempt of generalizing the practice of generalizing the practice of translation concerns the problem of translation but the author is interested in the technology and method of the processor translation more than methodology. One should also note the collection of articles “ About translation” among the editions published abroad in which was published by Harvard university in the USA in 1959. one of the two main divisions of the collection is devoted to the practice of transition of the Bible, the problem of giving poetical nuances, the problems of translation of Greek and Latin poetry into English and others and the second one touches upon specific problems of the theory of translation together with the linguistic aspects of translation. Though the authors of the collection have general importance of translation for the investigators of literature, according to the comparative method, for exposing literary phenomena and philosophical way of thinking, in mind this book witnesses that the investigation deprived of general correct methodology cannot go beyond the limits of empirical observations. Thus, the main problem of historical contradiction of free and word for word translation remain unsolved in this collection as well.
