How does conventional urban design reduce ‘natural security’?
Many of our cities, in both ‘developing’ and ‘developed’ nations, segregate people from the means of 
survival, such as healthy soil and food and clean water and air. When someone plugs up the conduits 
that supply these fundamental resources, people suffer (as seen in Palestine, Lebanon, etc). Political 
terrorists can easily detect ‘systems design errors’ in places where people lack access to the means of 
survival. In fact, studies found that the Twin Towers in New York collapsed in part because of the 
nature of its very ‘efficient’ structural design system.

Most skyscrapers around the world have similar 
vulnerabilities, despite differing structural details. Moreover, there is virtually no tall building that 
could withstand every earthquake, whereas low-density structures can be earthquake-proofed with 
wire or even low-cost variations on Green Scaffolding. The ‘Quake Safe’, for example, is a frame made 
from string, bamboo and wire that is retrofitted into an existing adobe house or incorporated into 
a new earth-walled house for structural protection against earthquakes.

Eco-logical design could 
also reduce the causes of conflict and militaristic approaches that restrict personal freedoms, life 
quality and genuine security. Design does not by itself redistribute wealth, of course, but it can better 
distribute the things in life that were meant to be free. Through sustainable design, the community 
can enjoy environmental amenities created by eco-logical design at no extra cost to the developer.
However, most design professionals have still not embraced a whole system or ecological perspective.
Even worse, some mainstream planners, environmental managers and engineers still generally relegate 
design to cosmetic treatment that comes after the basic industrial infrastructure is established.
