Positive Development From Vicious Circles to V

Wouldn’t solar design encourage ‘sprawl’ for access to renewable energy?
It should not. For example, the sun need not hit walls for heat to be collected. Roofs are excellent
for capturing solar energy for heating, cooling and ventilating. In the suburbs, there are immediate
opportunities to increase both the land-use
mix
and residential
density
– while adding ecological
values and functions to the built environment [Box 11]. These opportunities could be lost with
conventional approaches to urban and suburban infill development. The same issue arises with
access to wind. While wind power is one of the most efficient centralized forms of energy production,
distributing electricity over long distances reduces efficiency. Of course, centralized urban wind
energy production can be impeded by the effects of buildings, hills and trees. However, there are
now very lightweight, low-embodied energy wind generators that can more than cover their own
cost and ecological waste over time [Box 17]. Just as the source of energy is more important than
the amount, the
use
of space is more important than the amount used. While space is inherently
limited, minimalist segregated spaces for isolated functions can be more wasteful than large spaces, as
they tend to exclude
both
human and natural values. By maximizing the ecological space per person
(ie infrastructure for eco-services), we can enhance adaptability and social and natural capital, and
reduce total consumption. Both high-density urban building and suburban developments could be
eco-retrofitted for ecological space without waiting for land-use or real estate markets to change. So
instead of replacing existing housing with units, for example, we could retrofit for shared housing,
or convert some existing rooms to bio-productive greenhouse spaces (perhaps aided by fibre-optic
lighting in some cases).

In contrast, conventional urban design, by reducing energy independence,
reduces ‘natural security’.
