Is food, water or energy self-sufficiency a realistic goal in suburban areas?

Some suburban blocks may be too small for self-sufficiency in food production, especially in places
like Australia where soils are poor. However, domestic food and garden waste can be turned into soil
nutrients. Roof, deck and wall greenhouses can provide planting shelves. Truck transport or ‘food
miles’ can be reduced by more ‘edible landscapes’ or urban food production at different scales, such
as balconies, community gardens or de-commissioned roads. ‘Permaculture’-inspired arrangements
can enable each dwelling or housing complex to operate as a self-contained domestic production plant
– if not also a supply of food, clean air and water for neighbouring homes.

We can call such areas
‘ecological space’
 –
indoor or outdoor areas that are designed to provide eco-services. Ecological
space could save public resources by natural air and water cleansing; natural heating, cooling and
ventilating, providing habitats for native species, and even increasing resource security without using
additional space. The addition of ecological spaces in existing suburbs could support the ecological
regeneration of cities. We will later see how ecological space can serve as a measure of positive
impacts. Further, as domestic solar hot water and space heating require little roof area per household,
energy independence in suburban areas is quite feasible [Box 9]. Suburbs offer space for renewable
energy systems to support the inner city, such as neighbourhood-scale electricity production, using
renewable sources such as wind or sun. Solar disks, for example, are efficient at the neighbourhood
scale and take little land area [Box 18].
46
They can be situated in pocket parks or community gardens
or on existing infrastructure, without reducing usable open space.
