Under Absorption costing
system
there are 
four steps
of charging overhead costs to cost centres and 
cost units.
1. 
Allocation. 
2. 
Apportionment. 
3. 
Re-apportionment.

Absorption 
1. Allocation
 
is the charging or distributing of cost directly to the cost centres or cost units. Costs that 
relate to a single cost centre are allocated to that cost centre. Normally indirect materials and indirect 
labour costs are allocated. 
2. Apportionment 
is where an overhead is common, combined or joint to more than one cost centre 
and therefore it needs to be shared out amongst the relevant cost centres based on benefit received 
by each cost centre. 
 
Formula of overheads apportionment: 
Overhead apportionment = Department base x Production overheads
